Arthur volunteered for the RAF in 1942 aged just 17; he enlisted in Edinburgh and completed his basic training in St Johns Mill in Arbroath Scotland.
After basic RAF training Arthur was attached to the Canadian RAF where he served for 2 years. In 1944 his short RAF career came to an end, along with a lot of others he was transferred to the Army, he was posted to Migilligan Camp in Northern Ireland where he joined the 2nd Battalion the Lancashire Fusiliers, he was then transferred to the 4th Border Regiment.
Finally Arthur was able to transfer to the Parachute Regiment he was posted to the Park Hurst Brks Isle of White where he completed his basic Infantry Training.
After basic training Arthur was posted and travelled to India on a troop ship, he was stationed in Deolala Camp, during this time Arthur suffered from a short illness.
When Arthur was well enough he was posted to 16 Para Brig who at that time was stationed at Victoria Brks, he then completed his basic Para course when during an intensive 5 day course at Chaklala he completed 7 descents 6 day and one night.
On completion he was classed as a fully trained paratrooper and was sent to the jungle school at Bilasbur Camp, he was then trained as a signaller and posted to Murbe in the Cashmere border area and White Brks in Quetta in Baluchasen.
In 1946 Arthur’s Army career came to an end he returned to the Isle of White where he was demobbed and returned to Scotland.
In civilian life Arthur 1st joined a joinery company and from then became a manager for different companies including a supply company and finishing up in 1983 on ill health grounds as a Furnishings manager.
Arthur is a founding member of the Fife PRA and has served the branch over the years in various jobs.
